Who created this day? Justin Smith, from Virginia, created National Beer Day in 2009. In addition, National Beer Day was officially recognized by Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe in 2017. Congressman Dave Brat also officially noted National Beer Day on the Congressional Record in 2017.

What is the reason the day was created? In January 1920, alcohol was outlawed in America when the Eighteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution went into effect, known as “prohibition.” It was repealed in December 1933, with the ratification of the Twenty-first Amendment. However, beer made its way back into society a bid earlier in the midst of prohibition by a clever new law that redefined alcohol to exclude beer!

The date for National Beer Day was chose to be April 7, which marked the day in 1933 that the Cullen–Harrison Act went into effect. That law allowed purchase and consumption of drinks containing 3.2% alcohol by weight. That happens to be the perfect percentage for many beers. President Franklin D. Roosevelt, who signed the legislation was quoted saying: “I think this would be a good time for a beer.”

How to celebrate: Drink a pint or two of your favorite beer or try something completely new. Be sure to invite your friends. Just make sure to drink responsibly and bring along a designated driver or take a cab or Uber home. Other ideas include making a batch of home brew or sharing your favorite beer on social media.
