When is World Music Day?

World Music Day is June 21st.

What is World Music Day?

It’s the summer solstice, with the longest daylight in the year. What better day to celebrate the first day of summer than filling the streets with music? World Music Day celebrates musical forms the world over and encourages people to play their hearts out.

Yes, it’s a chance to celebrate music, but there’s more. World Music Day urges folks to get outside and play, whether that’s striking up the porch band or dropping sick riffs in the park. Here’s a day to play for free and a day to enjoy music as a community, together.

It started in 1982 in Paris as Fête de la Musique (“Music Day”) with the slogan “Faites de la musique” (“Make music”). Since then, more than 700 cities throughout 120 countries have held festivals, concerts, and spontaneous street performances on World Music Day.

Fun facts about World Music Day!

  • When you listen to music, your heartbeat changes to coordinate with the beat.
  • Metallica is the only band ever to play music in Antarctica.
  • Freddie Mercury, lead singer of British rock band Queen, was actually born Farroukh Bulsara to a Parsi family living in Gujarat, India.

How to celebrate World Music Day:

  • Play music in the streets! Take out your guitar, your violin, your bongos, or any other instrument you have lying around. Make music with your friends and family, or make it for strangers. Don’t keep it to yourself. Share your music.
  • Attend a free concert. Listen to a musical style that’s not familiar to you, and try immersing yourself in the emotions it evokes.
