Say Hi Day

When is Say Hi Day? This day will take place on June 11 of each calendar year.

What is Say Hi Day? Say Hi Day is meant to remind people that two powerful words can change the direction of someone’s day, bring a smile to someone’s face, or change someone’s mood. A simple greeting can trigger positive reactions and interactions. Saying hi to someone and getting a response involves very few works but for some it can make all the difference—words of connection as well as compatibility brings people together. Saying hi can change how someone feels or how you feel.

This seemingly small act of kindness can make a huge difference and brighten someone’s day. In this busy world and especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, we bury our heads and go on our phones, hide behind our masks, and do everything we can to avoid people. By saying hi you never know who you will influence by simply greeting them. You never know what kind of conversations, connections, or relationships you can ignite by saying hi.

Why is this day being celebrated or observed? Say Hi Day is about an amazing 15-year-old young man named Joseph Anthony Cinotti. Joseph spent his life saying hi to people he passed and the reactions that his “hi” received were beautiful and memorable. Joseph taught all of us how important the words Say Hi are. Joseph has always held everyone accountable to be polite, to be human and to remember that everyone in this life matters. Joseph was a young man with special needs, and he passed away in 2018. It has been my family and I’s life mission to keep our Joseph’s spirit alive, and there is no better way than for him to have his own special day. The amount of people that tell our family that Joseph would always remind them to simply say hi and be a kind human being, and how much his life has impacted them is extraordinary. Joseph imprinted on everyone who has crossed paths with him in life and we have been carrying on his tradition to just “say hi” and it has made all the difference.

How should this day be celebrated or observed? This day should be celebrated to remember to slow down and remember to be kind. Make a difference in someone else’s day, and to continue to make small acts of kindness throughout your days. You never know what someone may be going through and a simple hi could be just acknowledgement or encouragement in a positive way that people need. This day should be a day of practicing kindness and making a small effort that could lead to meaningful rewards for everyone.

Who created this day? This day was created in May 2021 by Summer Luciani.
