When is World Laughter Day?

The first Sunday in May is World Laughter Day.

What is World Laughter Day?

“Laugh it up, Fuzzball,” because it’s good for your abs, and your heart. Did we mention your immune system, or world peace? It’s good for those too. World Laughter Day celebrates the many health benefits of laughter and promotes harmony throughout the world.

Who organizes such a jovial event as World Laughter Day? Why, Laughter Clubs do, of course. In many large cities around the world, these groups orchestrate gatherings hundreds strong to laugh together, to do a massive laughter yoga session, and to march for world peace.

The list of medical benefits from laughter is hilariously long. It boosts the number of endorphins playfully swimming through your body, and it lowers your levels of cortisol, the stress hormone. Less stress means less anxiety and lower blood pressure, which decreases your risk for heart disease and stroke.

Also, those belly laughs burn fat and tighten up your core. So give it up for the giggles with some healthy, healthful LOLs.

Fun facts about World Laughter Day!

Mumbai, India was the location for the first World Laughter Day assembly in 1998.

A 2011 study found that laughter therapy worked better than music therapy to relieve stress and lower blood pressure.

Research in 2015 discovered that laughter therapy actually increases the levels of immunoglobulin in breast milk of postpartum mothers. (Yes, immunoglobulin supports the immune system.)
