When is World Down Syndrome Day?

World Down Syndrome Day occurs on March 21st.

What is World Down Syndrome Day?

Everyone deserves a fair shake, but not everyone gets one. World Down Syndrome Day promotes the rights and well-being of people born with Down syndrome.

What causes Down syndrome? The culprit is an extra chromosome. Chromosomes are DNA molecules, and they carry our gene information. Humans normally have 23 pairs of these little guys. Add an extra copy of chromosome 21, and the body gets confused. It’s like TMI for your genes.

The result is alterations to learning styles, health, and physical appearance. However, that does not mean Down syndrome makes people witless and incapable. Many people with Down syndrome keep jobs, hang out at the park, and live independent lives.

So here’s a day to bust the myths about this genetic condition. World Down Syndrome Day celebrates the humanity of people with Down syndrome. Call it genetic diversity if you like. Or, just call it the many shades of being human.
