When is National Women’s Equality Day? National Women’s Equality Day has been celebrated on August 26th of every year since 1920.

What is National Women’s Equality Day? In 1920 Congress passed the 19th Amendment to the Constitution giving women full voting rights. Now, every year on the 26th we celebrate this Amendment granting women equality.

In 1848 the first women’s rights convention was held in Seneca Falls. From this convention efforts were made to grant women equal voting rights, but this initiative consistently failed in Congress, until August 26, 1920. Abolitionist Frederick Douglass helped to fight for women’s rights forward, though he died before witnesses the fruit of his partnership. 20 years after his death, women would be granted equality in the United States.

Fun facts: It took unbelievable striving for women to receive equality socially, economically, legally and representatively. Since the passing of the 19th Amendment every president, on August 26, has affirmed this day as National Women’s Equality Day. Once the change occurred the US has continued to push forward.
