When is National VFW Day?
September 29th is National VFW Day.
What is National VFW Day?
Our veterans have kept us safe. They’ve fought, on our behalf, for the love of their country, for American prosperity, and for our right to be free. That’s why on National VFW Day we honor U.S. veterans and celebrate the organization that serves them.
Homecoming from war is never easy. It used to be harder though. After the Spanish-American War in 1898 and the 1899-1902 Philippine-American War, veterans found themselves wounded, sick, and caring for themselves without pensions or medical aid. So they banded together in local groups to advocate for the rights of veterans.
These groups became a movement, and that crusade gathered into the organization we now know as the VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States). Today, the VFW supports veterans as well as active, guard, or reserve forces, and their families. The group advocated for the national cemetery system, the Veterans Administration, the GI Bill, and many other benefits for American military service.
Our soldiers sacrifice time with their families, postpone careers, and throw themselves in harm’s way. Remember their service on National VFW Day.
Fun facts about National VFW Day!
Of the 20 million veterans in the United States, 1.6 million are members of the VFW.
California, Florida, and Texas each boasts more than 1 million residents who are military veterans.
Any folks who served in the U.S. military—during wartime or peacetime—count as veterans. The VFW specifically aids veterans who served in overseas conflicts.
How to celebrate National VFW Day:
Remember our troops. Donate to veteran-support organizations, like the VFW. Promote groups that help with post-military careers and medical treatment.
Help out a military family. Have them over for dinner. Throw a welcome home meal for recently returned troops.
