When will National Unc Day be celebrated? August 7th of each calendar year.
What is National Unc Day? National “Unc” Day is for everyone to honor and remember our positive elder role models, and mentors who act as friends and “second parents.” It is a day to recognize their role in providing love, support, and useful memories through cultural connection. “Unc” is a term used in the Black community that can also be used to describe a male family friend that helps guide the younger generation in some way.
How should National Unc Day be celebrated or observed?
- Tap In: Call, text, visit, or post about an “Unc” who made a difference in your life. The key is to be specific. Don’t just say, “Thank you.” Say what they taught you, how they showed up, or what memory stayed with you.
- Host an “Unc Cookout” or Family Meal: Food is one of the easiest ways to celebrate culture and connection. A cookout, fish fry, BBQ, breakfast, or family dinner gives people a chance to gather, tell stories, laugh, and honor the elders while they are still here.
- Record Their Stories: One of the most powerful ways to celebrate is to interview an Unc. Ask about his childhood, lessons learned, favorite music, family memories, mistakes he grew from, and advice for younger generations.
- Mentor in Their Honor: A great way to honor an Unc is to become one. Men can use the day to commit to mentoring, coaching, volunteering, checking in on a young person, or being more present in their family and community.
Why was National Unc Day created? National “Unc” Day should be celebrated because “Unc” represents more than age or family title. In many Black communities, “Unc” is the trusted elder, the neighborhood legend, the family friend, the mentor, the coach, the barber, the church member, the OG, or the steady male presence who helps guide younger people through life.
He may not always be someone’s biological uncle, but he often plays an uncle-like role: giving advice, telling stories, checking in, teaching lessons, showing up at games, helping young people avoid mistakes, and passing down culture.
This holiday matters because it recognizes the men who often lead quietly. They may not ask for attention, but their presence shapes families, communities, and generations.
