When will this Day be celebrated?  February 24th of each calendar year.

What is National Tortamali Day?   My grandmother was well known for her cooking especially her tortillas, her tamales and her green chili stew. The whole town loved her food so much she sold hundreds of dozens of tamales, tortillas and quarts of her green chili every year! That’s hundreds of thousands of tortillas and tamales and pots of chili. Local restaurants bought them and served them in their restaurants. Community events, funerals and weddings were also catered with her cooking.

Why is this day being created?   Recently my wonderful grandmother passed away on February 6th.  I wanted to honor my grandmother’s memory and continue her legacy. I thought the best way to honor her would be to make her birthday a National Day of remembering the best foods she made and was known for. People who didn’t even know her have eaten her food and had no idea who she was but just remembered the flavor.

How should this day be observed?   I think we should all enjoy some traditional tortillas and pork red chili tamales smothered in Colorado pork green chili stew. Her famous dessert that she would whip up was an amazing cinnamon chocolate cake topped off with a thin layer of a homemade chocolate glaze.

Who created this day?  This day was created by Donisia Guieterrez in 2022.
