When will National Take Action in Fashion Day be observed? April 24th of each calendar year.

What is National Take Action in Fashion Day? Fast fashion may offer clothing at a discount, but we are all ultimately paying a much higher price. While the drop in garment prices has allowed us to buy more and more clothing, it has come with tremendous consequences to our health, our planet, and our people- particularly our garment workers.

Take Action in Fashion Day is dedicated to changing how we buy, wear, and think about fashion through awareness, representation, and engagement.

How should National Take Action in Fashion Day be observed? Take Action in Fashion is an initiative that changes how we buy, wear, and think about fashion through awareness, representation, and engagement. Here are some ideas to use this framework to observe Take Action in Fashion Day!

Awareness:
Use educational resources to become more aware of the fashion industry’s impact on people and the planet. Some examples include:

  • The True Cost documentary
  • Sustainable fashion podcasts & books
  • Articles and brand directories from organizations like Good on You
  • Courses from organizations like Remake (501(c)(3))
  • Slow media- which, of course, includes @TakeActioninFashion on Instagram and www.TakeActioninFashion.com

Representation:
Wear something sustainable and share a photo with the hashtag #TakeActioninFashion. Sustainable fashion can mean so many different things- here are just a few examples:

An item…
…you have had for a long time
…you thrifted or rented
…from a sustainable/ethical retailer
…you borrowed
…made of recycled materials
…you repaired or upcycled
…that’s new, but you will ensure it has a long life

Sustainability isn’t about perfection- it’s about small, imperfect, and intentional action.

Engagement:
Bring awareness and representation together to take action. Share the resources that sparked your passion, have intentional conversations about purchasing power and voting every day with our dollars, sign petitions that encourage brands to pay fair wages and reduce their environmental impacts, anything that will engage you and your community in the sustainable fashion movement.

Why was National Take Action in Fashion Day created? On April 24, 2013, the Rana Plaza garment factory in Bangladesh collapsed. This collapse killed 1,132 people and left thousands more injured. This tragedy shocked people all across the world, and became a symbol of the fashion industry’s impact and the desperate need for sustainable reform.

Things have improved, but not enough. Take Action in Fashion Day, to be observed on April 24th each year, ensures we continue to have intentional conversations about the fashion industry.

Who created this day? This day was created by Miranda Moore in 2023.
