National Speak Up For Victims of Sexual Abuse Day

When is National Speak Up for Victims of Sexual Abuse Day? This day will take place on October 18 of each calendar year.

What is National Speak Up for Victims of Sexual Abuse Day?

National Speak Up for Victims of Sexual Abuse Day is about recognizing the tragedy that is sexual abuse. Sexual abuse happens to men, women, and children. But because of the nature of the crime, it is often kept silent and victims are immeasurably negatively impacted by this. Recognizing these victims and encouraging them to speak up about their experiences can help them to heal. National Speak Up for Victims of Sexual Abuse Day is one step towards the greater mission of helping every victim of sexual abuse around the world.

Why is this day being celebrated or observed?

This day is being created to help victims of sexual abuse. This came about because of Jack Nunnery, a survivor of childhood sexual abuse. Her mission is Speak Up—to give people that went through similar experiences to her the power to speak up about it in order to heal. The message is about providing a positive support system to empower victims and recognize these tragedies that happen around the world. As one of the least recognized movements due to its pervasive nature, it is vitally important that this changes in order to help the innumerable amount of people affected. This holiday helps to significantly spread awareness and give victims a voice. That is why observing this day is important to help achieve the mission.

How should this day be celebrated or observed?

This day should be observed by recognizing victims of sexual abuse and giving them the positivity and support they need to help them heal. Giving them that recognition allows them to speak up about their experience without fear or judgment. Recognize these victims by wearing teal, the color of support for victims of sexual abuse, showing other forms of support, and spreading the message in any way you can.

Who created this day? This day was created in October 2021 on behalf of Jack Nunnery.
