When is National Scotch Day? July 27 is the day when we are all given a valid excuse to drink scotch whiskey.

What is National Scotch Day? For clarity sake, scotch is whiskey that is made in Scotland and bourbon is whiskey made in the U.S.A. Scotch is made from malted barley and bourbon is distilled from corn. Scotch whiskey must be aged in oak barrels for at least three years — otherwise it’s not actually scotch.

Fun facts about National Scotch Day! The first written mention of scotch comes from way back in 1495! We have written scrolls which record royal income. In such a scroll, we find an order placed for scotch. Since then scotch has become one of the most popular liquors and is the staple drink of Scotland.

How to celebrate National Scotch Day: The best way to enjoy National Scotch Day would be to go to Scotch distilleries and sample all the incredible variations of this refined drink. But assuming you don’t live in Scotland, we would recommend that you have several friends over, having each friend bring a different kind of scotch, and you spend the evening sampling different kinds. Each scotch drink comes with its own variation of taste so get together and see if you can identify the unique flavors and blends.

As always, be responsible by not driving and by looking out for those around you.
