When is National Pet Parents Day?

National Pet Parents Day occurs on the last Sunday in April.

What is National Pet Parents Day?

It falls on a Sunday like Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. They might not be blood-relations, but we often treat our pets like adopted children. National Pet Parents Day honors the lasting connections that bond pets and owners together.

Our four-footed friends ward off intruders, keep out rodents, and sooth our troubled minds. We care for our pets and nurture them for the priceless companionship they give in return. A lot of us regard our pets as family. Veterinary Pet Insurance found this true of many policyholders, so they created National Pet Parents Day in 2007.

Pets are messy. They forget the rules, and they poo in the wrong place. And they learn, like children. Some consider the terms ‘fur kids’ and ‘fur babies’ as degrading to human children, but that doesn’t have to be the case. These names can simply acknowledge affection for and commitment to animal companions.

People grieve over lost pets. We cherish them and play with them and learn how to get along. Pets can become close friends, and National Pet Parents Day celebrates this place our furry friends have in the family.

Fun facts about National Pet Parents Day!

Dog’s mainly cool off by panting, though they do also sweat from the bottoms of their feet. Cats have no sweat glands.

Cats rarely meow at each other. They often only reserve this form of communication for humans.

Almost 80 million American households had pets in 2016, and more than 33 million had more than one pet.
