What is National No Phone Day?

Our phones are powerful tools. They help us navigate, connect, and engage with the world around us. Remember life before the cell phone? Remember navigating a trip with a compass and a giant roadmap? Remember discovering your new favorite place to eat by reading a review in the weekly food and wine section of the newspaper? Remember not being late, because you told your friends to meet you at the movies at 7pm? There’s a satisfaction in going through the process that comes from not having a phone. There’s delight in the unknown and discovering something new, without the crutch of colorful technology. National No Phone Day is a day to celebrate that process. It’s a day to reconnect with family, an old friend, or a special project. It’s a day to say, “No. I will not succumb to unmerited anxiety, trivial gossip, or useless stress.” It’s a day to do something that you love … and it’s ok if no one knows about it.

Why was National No Phone Day created?

This day is being created by me because I’m exhausted by people walking into me while they’re looking at their phones. Last week, I was at the grocery store, searching high and low for my favorite non-dairy creamer. Then, a young woman with big sneakers and a sparkly IPhone walked directly into me, as if I was a mosquito in the air. I think to myself, “Why the heck are you on your phone? Do you really need to be looking at TikTok or texting your boo?” Here I am, just trying to shop for groceries, safely and quietly. Sadly, this situation is tenfold, as people have become addicted to their eye-candy screens and oblivious to the wonderful world around them. This day is being created, by me, to celebrate human intelligence and stimulate creativity. This day is being created, by me, to remind a younger generation that we are better. We don’t need a phone to find that destination. We don’t need a phone to follow that wannabe food influencer, and we don’t need a phone to text someone that we’re running late, when all along, we should’ve been on time. So, let’s leave our phones at home for a day, and do something better.

This day is being created, by me, to celebrate human intelligence and stimulate creativity. This day is being created, by me, to remind a younger generation that we are better. We don’t need a phone to find the destination. We don’t need a phone to follow a wannabe restaurant influencer, and we definitely, don’t need a phone to text someone that we’re running late, when all along, we should’ve been on time. So, let’s leave our phones at home for a day, and do something better!

How should National No Phone Day be observed?

This day should be celebrated. Leave your phone at home, and feel a world of difference.
