National No Nitrates Awareness Day

When will National Nitrate Awareness Day be celebrated? November 17th of each calendar year.

What is National Nitrate Awareness Day Day? National Nitrate Awareness Day is dedicated to raising awareness about the impact of nitrates and nitrites on our health and their widespread presence in the foods we eat every day. These additives are commonly used in deli meats, bacon, and sausages as preservatives and color enhancers, but growing research has linked their consumption to serious health risks, including cancer and heart disease. Many consumers are unaware of how often they encounter these ingredients, even in foods labeled as “natural.” This day aims to educate the public, encourage label reading, and promote cleaner, safer food choices. By spreading awareness and empowering consumers to make informed decisions, National Nitrate Awareness Day seeks to spark change across the food industry and inspire a healthier, more transparent food system. Ultimately, this day celebrates progress toward a future where Americans can enjoy the foods they love without compromising their health.

How should National Nitrate Awareness Day be celebrated or observed? It should be celebrated by choosing foods that do not contain Nitrates/Nitrates on this day and making a concerted effort in minimizing/eliminating foods that have these in people’s diets.

Why was National Nitrate Awareness Day created? We would like to designate National Nitrate Awareness Day to raise awareness about the impact of nitrates and nitrites in our food system, particularly in processed meats, and to celebrate cleaner, more natural food choices. For decades, nitrates and nitrites have been used as preservatives and color stabilizers in deli meats, bacon, and sausages. While they serve a functional purpose, mounting evidence has linked their consumption to potential health risks, including increased cancer risk and cardiovascular concerns. Yet, despite growing awareness, most Americans still consume nitrates daily, often unknowingly.

Who created this day? This day was created by No Nitrates November in 2025.
