When is National Nail Polish Day?

June 1st is National Nail Polish Day.

What is National Nail Polish Day?

Ah, summer. Out comes the sun hat and the sandals and, yes, the brightly painted toe nails. Nail polish is fashionable any day of the year, but National Nail Polish Day celebrates the warm-weather opportunities to care for and show off those painted nails.

It’s as old as the Egyptians. Polish adorned the nails of the upper class for centuries, but it only became popular in the early 1900s. Now, there are thirteen different finishes and a whole rainbow of colors.

Our nails protect our fingers, but our nail polish doesn’t have to damage our nails. National Nail Polish Day is a great day to enjoy beautiful nails while also polishing up your nail care practices.

Fun facts about National Nail Polish Day!

  • Modern nail polish was developed from car enamel in the 1920s.
  • It’s debatable whether French tips came from Paris in the ‘30s or from Hollywood’s need for actresses to make quick costume changes.
  • Your nails are made of the same material as your hair: keratin.
  • A typical batch of nail polish is made with nitrocellulose, which used to be an ingredient in TNT. (Maybe that’s why your nails pop.)

How to celebrate National Nail Polish Day:

  • Paint your fingernails and toenails. Make it a party with your girlfriends. Decorate with crazy shades, or keep it simple—simply beautiful, that is.
  • Care for your nails. Remember that using a base coat can prevent nails from yellowing. Nails also need a short break between manicures so that they don’t start to weaken. Picking at the polish can weaken your nails, but so can excessive use of acetone removers. Do your own research to make sure you know your facts.
