When is World Bee Day?
May 20th is World Bee Day
What is World Bee Day?
Most bee species don’t make honey. That doesn’t make them useless though. Around the world, bee populations play vital roles in different ecosystems. Human activities are pressuring bee colonies though, and World Bee Day brings these hazards to international attention.
The threat to bees is a far-reaching menace. Most of the world’s wild flowering plants depend on pollinators like birds, bats and bees. Pollinators also hold an essential place in crop production around the world.
Bee’s need protection year round, but the 20th of May is special. It’s the birthday of the Slovenian bee expert Anton Janša (1734–1773), the father of modern beekeeping. World Bee Day remembers his work by raising awareness about the plight of the world’s bees.
