“I find it wholesome to be alone the greater part of the time. To be in company, even with the best, is soon wearisome and dissipating. I love to be alone. I never found the companion that was so companionable as solitude.” —Henry David Thoreau, an excerpt from the book, Walden

On what day is National Hermit Day? October 29

What is National Hermit Day? Currently, there are 7.442 billion people in the world. Of those 7 billion, 325.7 million live in the U.S. If that statistic makes you a little claustrophobic, then you’re in luck! National Hermit Day encourages individuals to kick back, relax and enjoy some “me” time in seclusion. Whether you choose to stay at home or visit a quiet, private retreat, this day focuses on unplugging from the world and enjoying time alone—no electronics required!

Who founded this day? The founder of this day is unknown. However, it is rumored to honor the death of St. Colman of Ireland, best known for his 7 year hermitage.
