When is National Good Neighbor Day?

National Good Neighbor Day is September 28th.

What is National Good Neighbor Day?

“Good fences make good neighbors,” said Robert Frost, but he was being ironic. National Good Neighbor Day is dedicated to tearing down the metaphorical walls between us and our neighbors. It’s a day to be grateful for good neighbors around us while practicing our own neighborly skills.

We can communicate across the globe in a blink of an eye, but sometimes it’s hard to talk to the person across the street. National Good Neighbor Day encourages meaningful communication with whoever lives nearby. Whether down the block, at the post office, or in the same apartment complex, here’s a day to introduce yourself to your neighbors and learn more about them.

After all, we have to live with each other. We may as well like it.

Fun facts about National Good Neighbor Day!

President Jimmy Carter declared September 24th, 1978 to be National Good Neighbor Day, but its Becky Mattson of Lakeside, Montana who originally created the holiday in the early 1970s.

How to celebrate National Good Neighbor Day:

  • Deliver some baked goods to your neighbors. Hollywood scenes have cheapened the idea, but people genuinely appreciate it in real life.
  • Offer your neighbors over for a meal. If you feel uncomfortable with that idea, invite some other friends too. The more the merrier. Just be sure to ask if they have any food allergies.
  • Host a neighborhood block party. This is a great day for it, though, when is this not a good idea?
  • Offer to help with yard work. The leaves are already falling by the end of September, and who wouldn’t appreciate another pair of hands?
