On what day is National Free Comic Book Day celebrated? First Saturday in May

What is National Free Comic Book Day? After seeing how successful comic book based feature films were performing at the box office, Joe Feld proposed the idea for Free Comic Book Day in an industry magazine. Image Comics publisher Jim Valentino suggested having the first Free Comic Book Day on the same weekend as the opening of the 2002 Spider-Man feature film. This took advantage of the heavy promotion of the film and piggybacked on the media coverage that was being given to the comic book genre.

On Free Comic Book Day, participating comic book store retailers give away specially printed copies of free comic books, and some offer special deals and creator signings to those visiting their establishments. In its first six years, more than 2000 retailers in more than 30 countries gave away more than 12 million Free Comic Book Day special edition comic books.

Who founded this day? Free Comic Book Day was founded by Image Comics in 2002.
