When is National Fragrance Day?

March 21st is National Fragrance Day.

What is National Fragrance Day?

Cookies, vanilla, and crayons may not complement each other, but we sure love these scents separately. On National Fragrance Day, we celebrate our sense of smell and the scents that delight our senses.

Smells trigger memories and emotions. What happens when you step outside on a late summer evening to the scent of freshly mown grass? Do certain fragrances remind you of your grandmother, or baseball season?

Perfumes have their place, but they account for only a small number of the odors we encounter every day. Humans can perceive a trillion different smells, and National Fragrance Day is a chance to enjoy and explore the world of smells.

Fun facts about National Fragrance Day!

  • Women tend to have better senses of smell than men.
  • Each person has a distinct odor, like fingerprints.
  • The nose has 400 smell receptors.
  • Sick people smell sick, and fearful people actually smell like they’re afraid. It’s all in the sweat.
  • The brain’s olfactory center connects directly to the centers of emotion (amygdala) and memory (hippocampus).

How to celebrate National Fragrance Day:

  • Go through your kitchen, and smell everything you love to smell.
  • Step outside, and see how many smells you can detect. Then walk around a bit and smell the roses, literally.
  • Wear a perfume or cologne you especially enjoy.
  • Buy flowers for your home. Be sure to take a good sampling of the smells before you make your selection.
