When will this Day be celebrated? January 19th of each calendar year.

What is National Conservation Dog Day? It’s a day to celebrate dogs helping advance conservation through scent detection of endangered, invasive, and elusive species. With their odor-finding expertise, willingness to work, and ability to create unbreakable bonds, Finders (canines) are the perfect fit to work alongside their Keepers (handlers) to collect useful and more reliable data for field scientists—and they do it in record time while making a low impact on the earth.

Why is this day being created? To date, no man-made instrument has been able to replicate dogs’ scenting power and efficiency. Pairing their super sniff capabilities with a natural desire to work makes dogs a one-of-a-kind superhero for conservation work. We believe that these amazing canines deserve a day to celebrate their hard work!

How should this day be observed? To join the celebration of dogs making a snifference, spend extra time with your own dog while playing scent games together leading up to this national day. Take a video or picture of your sniff-tastic adventures and share on social media using #makeasnifference. You can also donate to a canine conservation organization to help these special dogs continue the planet paw-tecting work they love!

Who created this day?  This day was created by Conservation Dogs Collective, Inc. in 2022.
