What day is National Coffee Day celebrated? September 29 in the U.S. But other countries have different dates for celebrating Coffee Day. For instance, International Coffee Day is celebrated on October 1.

National Coffee Day was first celebrated in about 2005, but did not take off as a holiday until September 29, 2009. That’s the day that the Southern Food and Beverage Museum in New Orleans labeled the day as Coffee Day as a kick off to the inaugural New Orleans Coffee Festival.

What is National Coffee Day? National Coffee Day is a day to celebrate coffee. People from around the world love their coffee. But the U.S. drinks more coffee than any nation. The typical American adult drinks 2.7 cups of coffee a day. 150 million Americans drink 400 million cups of coffee per day and that amounts to 140 billion cups gulped down per year.

If you love coffee then you know why there is a National Coffee Day—to celebrate coffee. There are so many brews of coffee that one day won’t be enough, but only a salute to the glorious coffee bean. But there’s more involved in a good cup of Joe than the bean. True, the bean itself affects the texture, i.e., silky, creamy, thick or thin. But the flavor is also dependent upon the roast and brew.

The region a coffee is grown also affects the flavor due to the acidity of the soil and environment. The higher the elevation where coffee is grown, the higher the acidity and the higher the quality. That may explain why Brazil produces more coffee in the world than anyone. Columbia is second out of 50 countries that grow coffee.

With such a love for coffee, it’s only natural that there would be a National Coffee Day. On this day, many businesses offer free or discounted cups of coffee. Many countries also use this day to bring awareness to promote fair trade coffee.

How to celebrate: It’s simple to celebrate, just enjoy a cup of coffee. Why not also bring in coffee to work or ask a friend on a coffee date? Frequently Dunkin Donuts and other chains offers a free cup of coffee on National Coffee Day, so check on the Internet to see if you can get a free cup.

What is the hashtag? The Twitter hashtag for National Coffee Day is #NationalCoffeeDay.

What other national days are there for coffee? Several other national days have sprung up to celebrate coffee, including:

  • Coffee Ice Cream Day September 6
  • Coffee Milkshake Day July 26
