When will National Clothing Insecurity Awareness Day be celebrated? September 15th of each calendar year.
What is National Clothing Insecurity Awareness Day? National Clothing Insecurity Awareness Day shines a spotlight on the often-overlooked issue of clothing insecurity — the lack of adequate clothing to meet basic needs for comfort, dignity, and everyday life. This national day brings attention to the millions of children, families, and individuals who face barriers to education, employment, and self-worth simply because they do not have appropriate clothing. It’s a day to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and inspire action.
How should National Clothing Insecurity Awareness Day be celebrated or observed?
- Spark online conversation and awareness by sharing personal stories, impact stats, or photos using the hashtag #NationalClothingInsecurityAwarenessDay.
- Partner with local organizations to donate quality, seasonally appropriate, and size-inclusive clothing.
- Schools, nonprofits, and businesses can host panels, workshops, or donation events to spread awareness and mobilize resources.
- Support local nonprofits addressing clothing insecurity by volunteering or fundraising to meet year-round clothing needs.
Why was National Clothing Insecurity Awareness Day created? Clothing insecurity affects millions of people across the United States, yet it remains largely invisible. Two out of every 5 children in America experience clothing insecurity. While food and housing insecurity are widely recognized, clothing — a basic human need — is frequently left out of the conversation. This day is being created to bring national visibility to this hidden crisis, honor the dignity of every person, and inspire solutions.
The mission of the nonprofit Note in the Pocket (located in the Triangle region of North Carolina) is to provide quality clothing to homeless and impoverished children and families with dignity and love. By dedicating a day to awareness and action, Note in the Pocket hopes to extend clothing insecurity awareness outside of our region and to offer guidance to those contemplating the launch of a similar program. We hope to inspire new clothing distribution programs in a growing number of communities each year. Learn how to address clothing insecurity: https://noteinthepocket.org/clothing-insecurity/.
