National Borinqueneers Day recognizes the service and sacrifice of the Puerto Rican Regiment of the Volunteer Infantry. This regiment is now known as the 65th Infantry Regiment of the United States Army.

During the Korean War, this regiment adopted the nickname “The Borinqueneers.” It is name after the Taíno Indians, who were the original inhabitants of Puerto Rico or the island of Borinquen. The Borinqueneers fought bravely and received over  2,500 Purple Hearts, 500 Bronze Stars, 250 Silver Stars, and 1 Medal of Honor.
