National Black Literacy Day

When is National Black Literacy Day? This day will take place on February 14 of each calendar year.

What is National Black Literacy Day? On National Black Literacy Day, we focus on building upon the concepts that “Literacy is Freedom” and that “Reading is a Revolutionary Act”. We are focused on increasing literacy rates for underrepresented people in the Chicagoland area and beyond! February 14th is not only Frederick Douglass’ birthday, but also Valentine’s Day, and we’d like to focus on the love of community via literacy.

Why is this day being celebrated or observed? This day is being observed to consistently bring attention to literacy and the necessity of reading and writing to education!

How should this day be celebrated or observed? This day should be celebrated by reading, buying books from a Black bookstore, and donating books/resources to literacy-focused organizations.

Who created this day? This day was created by Semicolon Bookstore in February 2021.
