When will National Black Family Business Day be celebrated? August 26th of each calendar year.

What is National Black Family Business Day? A day that honors all black families in business. Whether a black family has a restaurant, manufacturing company, retail, or as in my case real estate investment company, this day can highlight and celebrate their success. The economic impact by minority owned family businesses is growing. My desire is to highlight the legacy and benefits of how working within your own family can change the trajectory of several generations. My father was a young black man of 18 when he made an improbable decision and purchased his first home. He continued to buy property every year without bank financing for twenty years. This company is now in its third generation with my son at the helm. The statistics are staggering only 30 percent of family businesses survive until the 2nd generation and a mere 12% make it to the third.

How should National Black Family Business Day be celebrated or observed? This day should be on the calendar and newsworthy. Some businesses may offer deals or other measures to draw traffic to their establishments.

Why was National Black Family Business Day created? Black family owned and operated businesses should be celebrated and recognized for their contribution to society. I have watched many black family owned businesses over the years, and in Seattle, I have participated in Black Dollar Days where we come together and support these establishments. A National Day to highlight be it in press locally or nationally will continue to shed light on the hard work so many families do which often goes unnoticed.

Who created this day? This day was created by Dana Frank in 2022.
