When will National Architecture Day be celebrated? November 1st of each calendar year.
What is National Architecture Day? This day is to celebrate the contribution of Architecture to the world and the many ways it touches our everyday lives. Whether at your home or your apartment, in your place of work or at your school – a team of people designed, engineered and built the places we experience.
Many times it goes unnoticed – by design. The functionality and appropriateness of design elements are chosen to enhance the activity with lighting levels, spatial constraints, durability of materials and ease of use. Basic requirements like this are often overlooked, but only if they are done correctly.
And then there are times when it’s more noteworthy, like when we visit a museum or a historic place and our senses are engaged. The same requirements are noticed and celebrated!
Lastly, when we reflect on historic structures still erect today – such as the many Roman Coliseums peppering the continent of Europe, the Villa Savoye in France (pictured below) or the still-under-construction Sagrada Familia in Spain, or the Pueblos in New Mexico dating back over 1,000 years ago – the impact of architecture is even more profound.
How should National Architecture Day be celebrated or observed?
- Take notice of architecture and how it influences your experience. Does it make your experience better or worse, and why questions like this are the essence of design.
- Thank your friends and family in the design and construction industry for all their hard work – it takes a village!
