When is National Anthem Day?

March 3rd is National Anthem Day.

What is National Anthem Day?

The star-spangled banner continues to wave over this land, and it’s because of our soldiers and their courage in defending this country. On National Anthem Day, we honor Francis Scott Key, the anthem he wrote, and the successful defense of Fort McHenry.

Francis Scott Key was a lawyer serving in the militia during the War of 1812. His status as an attorney made him a good candidate for hostage negotiation. During an attack on Baltimore and Fort McHenry in 1814, he helped negotiate the release of a prisoner on a British ship, but he had to wait for the battle to finish before heading back to shore.

The fort was pummeled through the night by cannon fire, and it resisted a British landing party in the early morning. As the sun rose, Francis Scott Key could see the 30-by-42-foot garrison flag flying in the wind as the sun rose, a testament to the American victory against the odds.

Fun facts about National Anthem Day!

  • Francis Scott Key strongly opposed entering the War of 1812 until the British began raiding American communities.
  • There are now five verses to The Star Spangled Banner, with the fifth being added in 1861.
  • “The Star Spangled Banner” became our national anthem in 1931. The Navy used it in ceremonies before that date.
  • The melody to the anthem was based on an old British drinking song, originally a farcical piece full of Greek mythological figures, composed for a club of amateur musicians in the 1700s.
