When will National Animal Rescuer Recognition Day be celebrated? June 7th of each calendar year.
What is National Animal Rescuer Recognition Day? Animal rescuers are the most unsung of heroes. A recent study found that animal rescuers experience more acute PTSD than EMTs, police officers and ER nurses. Worse, they are often scoffed and laughed at for their extreme compassion. Take for example, the little old lady on the corner feeding the neighborhood strays: The original animal rescuer. Nowadays, it’s the mom who rises at four to trap a dumped rabbit, who then goes on to work her regular job, but only after caring for her own human family and menagerie of abandoned animals. An animal rescuer’s daily struggle with Compassion Fatigue is real and misunderstood. Let us recognize the sacrifices of these noble caretakers and honor the critical role they play in a helping the most innocent among us, while making our society a kinder one.
How should National Animal Rescuer Recognition Day be celebrated or observed? Social media. All animal rescue organizations will post. A parade with rescuers and their pets. Interviews with animal rescuers organizations. Press releases.
Why was National Animal Rescuer Recognition Day created? There exists a Wildlife Rehabilitators Day for those who save wildlife, but no day for saving livestock and/or pets. Most people have absolutely no idea what an animal rescuer does on the daily and this day would bring awareness to their important societal role. The cornerstone of a caring society is the virtue of compassion. This and other positive traits should be recognized and encouraged so that our children see that example and go onto build a kinder world for future generations.
Who created this day? This day was created by Gwen Kaiser in 2024.
