When is National American Eagle Day?

June 20th is National American Eagle Day.

What is National American Eagle Day?

The Land of the Free needs a symbol of freedom, and nothing beats the bald eagle. To promote bald eagle protection, National American Eagle Day celebrates this majestic raptor as a fitting emblem of the United States of America.

They look so angry, you might think. That, dear friends, is not anger. It’s intensity. They dive at 100 miles per hour and soar with authority. They’ve even been known to drown while trying to heave a massive fish out of the water. There’s nothing half-hearted about these birds—except maybe their screech, which sounds like a seagull making a horse impression.

The bald eagle became our national bird in 1782. It graces our currency, government seals, and the t-shirts and bumper stickers of proud Americans. They almost went extinct in the 70s, but bald eagles finally came off the endangered list in 2007.

They still face threats to their existence though. National American Eagle Day supports bald eagles and the protection of their habitats.

Fun facts about National American Eagle Day!

  • Bald eagles can’t quite swim, but they can row themselves across the water like a boat.
  • While they mostly dine on fish, bald eagles also eat garbage and mooch off the kills of other birds.
  • The wingspan of a bald eagle is 7 feet across. These birds weigh between 6 and 14 pounds.

How to celebrate National American Eagle Day:

  • Research bald eagles to learn about their lives. Find out what people are doing to protect bald eagle habitats, and volunteer your time and resources to the preservation of American symbol.
  • Plan a visit to a location where you could watch bald eagles. Of course, they live near rivers and lakes, but not just any rivers and lakes. Find out specific sites where you can watch them leave their nests or return from hunting with a fish in tow.
