When is America Recycles Day?

America Recycles Day occurs every year on November 15th.

What is America Recycles Day?

Recycling never gets old. When we use up our recyclables, we just make them new again. It’s the circle of life for industrial goods, and America Recycles Day celebrates the practice of salvaging old materials for new applications.

Manufacturing useful things out of raw material takes energy. So when someone makes a glass bottle, is that manufacturing energy now gone? Nope. We have the power to recapture that energy. That’s one of the principles behind recycling. For example, making bottles from recycled glass requires 23% less energy than producing it with raw materials. Using less energy means we conserve more of the coal, oil, and gas those manufacturing processed require.

Recycling also rescues animals from untimely and sometimes grotesque deaths. More than one million sea creatures die every year from plastic bags that made their way to the ocean.

So remember: whether you recycle for the sake of the seals or to keep down the cost of kerosene, you’re taking part in long-term care of the only planet we have. Kudos.

Fun facts about America Recycles Day!

  • Aluminum cans can stay in the same shape for possibly more than 500 years
  • Every half hour, Americans use more than 2.5 million plastic bottles.
  • The energy savings from recycling a single glass bottle could power a 100-watt light bulb for four hours.

How to celebrate America Recycles Day:

  • Establish a recycling system for your home. Some people take their recycling to local recycling yards, but there may be a home pick-up recycling service in your area.
  • Buy merchandise that uses recycled materials, and think about your waste habits in your home and at work. Reduce, reuse, and recycle.
