National 5K Day

When is National 5K Day? The second Saturday in May, every year.

What is National 5K Day? National 5K Day is a celebration of the distance that started it all for millions of runners — the one that made you believe you could. The 5K has been part of the Olympic Games since 1912, but long before it was elite, it was personal. It’s the first race most runners ever pin a bib to their chest for. It’s the distance a parent runs alongside their kid, a survivor runs to reclaim something, and a competitor runs to leave everything on the course. At 3.1 miles, there’s nowhere to hide — just you, the clock, and the pure, gut-check challenge of running faster than you thought you could. Contested across cross-country, track & field, road, and trail races — from pre-school to professional, from first timers to Olympians — the 5K is the great equalizer of racing. And behind every race is a race director, a volunteer, a supporter — someone who made the finish line possible. National 5K Day honors all of them.

Why was this day created? National 5K Day was created to recognize the impact of the most accessible and widely participated race distance in the world — and to celebrate the athletes, organizers, and communities that make it possible. It’s a day to celebrate the journey of runners at every level, highlight the importance of local races and community events, inspire new athletes to take their first step toward the starting line, and support and grow the sport of running nationwide. Because the 5K isn’t just a race — it’s where running begins for so many.

How is National 5K Day observed? National 5K Day is meant to be participated in, not just recognized. You can celebrate by running a 5K at a local race or event, running your own 5K wherever you are, participating in the official National 5K Day Virtual Race, sharing your run and story on social media, and supporting local races, run clubs, and organizations. However, you run it — it counts.

Presented in Partnership with the Level Field Foundation

National 5K Day is proudly founded by the Level Field Foundation — built on a simple but powerful belief: the love of sport shouldn’t cost you the chance to compete. Our work has always been bigger than any one sport. It’s about creating a level playing field for all to participate, youth and adult. We actively remove the financial barriers that keep passionate athletes on the sidelines – from covering race entry fees and putting gear in the hands of athletes, to supporting athletic programs that are enabling all levels of competitors. We’re doing the work to make sure opportunity isn’t limited by circumstance. Because every athlete deserves a fair shot at the starting line — and every playing field should be level.
