When is International Women’s Day?

International Women’s Day falls on March 8th.

What is International Women’s Day?

It’s not about superiority. It’s about fairness and protection. International Women’s Day celebrates the achievements of women and promotes global gender equality.

Women get less schooling and average smaller incomes than men around the world. They get married earlier in life with little say in the matter, and they see more abuse. For example, child marriage ends a girl’s childhood early. It exposes her to health issues and increased chances of domestic violence. Girls younger than 15 are five times more likely to die in childbirth than women in their 20s, but more than 10% of girls in developing countries get married before the age of fifteen.

There are pockets of parity, but the professional world at large still fails to compensate women fairly. Males dominate leadership and the upper reaches of the pay range. More than 150 nations still have active sexism laws, like the treatment of women as their husband’s property, or like legitimized rape.

International Women’s Day pushes for headway against this global inequity. Promoting the dignity of all people can save vulnerable women from the poverty and abuse that comes from the global scourge of discrimination.

How to celebrate International Women’s Day:

  • Support women in their social and professional roles. Write a note to a woman at work or in your community (or your wife!) to admire and congratulate her for her accomplishments.
