When is this day celebrated?
September 5th is the International Day of Charity.
What is International Day of Charity?
The International Day of Charity promotes the spirit of generosity and worldwide efforts to eliminate poverty. Initially a Hungarian project, the United Nations instituted the International Day of Charity in 2012 to mobilize people and organizations in the fight against poverty.
The UN reports that 9.2% of the 2017 global population lived below the international poverty line, surviving on less than $1.90 per day—less than some of us pay for a simple cup o’ joe. The eradication of poverty is, according to the United Nations, the largest global challenge. Charity promotes the dignity of the underprivileged while it also advances education, science, and the protection of culture.
Fun facts:
The Hungarian government originally instituted the Day of Charity to commemorate the death of Mother Teresa of Calcutta (September 5, 1997). Her work in the slums of India has inspired millions to devote their time and resources to protect the most vulnerable and destitute throughout the world.
How to celebrate:
To celebrate, go volunteer! Look for soup kitchens or after school programs in your area. Then find an outlet for philanthropy. Browse GoFundMe pages. Search social media to see where your friends donate. Take some time to research how you can play a part in serving the needs of the impoverished.
