When will The Do For Others Day be celebrated? March 20th of each calendar year.
What is The Do For Others Day? I would like to have a national day when everyone does something kind for someone else. This idea was inspired by a book that was written decades ago, but we just brought it to life now. The book teaches children and their parents to put themselves into the shoes of someone else for a day, to live someone else’s life and to do their job, so they would have a better appreciation for their neighbors and people in the community. All I’m asking is for everyone to do something kind for someone else… preferably, someone that wouldn’t expect it.
How should The Do For Others Day be celebrated or observed?
- Reach out to local and national media outlets to share the story.
- Distribute the story in our newsletters and the Colorado Department of Education.
- Reach out to the National School Board Association. If we can get this started with the young people, it could become a habit.
- Create content to share on social media. I would encourage people to post them doing something kind, (similar to the ice bucket challenge). I do think we could get momentum behind it.
- Reach out to the various city chambers to make them aware and to encourage them to spread the message.
- The possibilities are endless. Numerous organizations that are based on community involvement, i.e. Habitat for Humanity, would want to promote this day and celebrate it with an event as well.
Why was The Do For Others Day created? I feel a day like this could bring a much-divided country together. If everyone could put their own needs aside for just a moment to help someone else, it could have a profound effect on a community. I know that when my family and I do it, the recipient seems to be surprised and grateful. I have also spoken to others who had someone unexpectedly do a kind act for them, and it had a lasting effect.
