When will National Cancer Hero Day be celebrated? November 27th of each calendar year.

What is National Cancer Hero Day? National Cancer Hero Day is a special day dedicated to honoring and celebrating the bravery, strength, and resilience of cancer patients, survivors, and their families. It is a day to raise awareness about cancer, recognize the challenges faced by those affected by the disease, and show support for their journey. National Cancer Hero Day is an opportunity to acknowledge the courage and determination of individuals battling cancer, and the people serving and supporting them as well as to highlight the importance of early detection, research, and access to quality care. It’s a day for communities to come together to celebrate the heroes who inspire hope and positivity in the face of adversity.

How should National Cancer Hero Day be celebrated or observed? On this day, people across the nation come together to celebrate the Cancer Heroes in their lives- they are ordinary beings living extraordinary lives. While people may find their ways of celebrating, that could look like galas and storytelling evenings that leave people touched, moved and inspired.

Personally, I intend to hold a gala night with a fashion show called “Beauty Beyond Cancer”. Cancer survivors get to walk the ramp and empower others to embrace their bodies just the way they are. There will be stand up comedians, musicians and dancers that are cancer survivors. Proceeds from the gala go towards funding cancer research and/or supporting organizations that serve cancer patients. We get to show are small documentary on stories shared by cancer survivors. Attendees get ribbons on which they print names of Cancer Heroes that they might know and the ribbon is pinned on a tapestry.

Why was National Cancer Hero Day created? Cancer Heroes are everywhere. They are individuals who provide hope and support to those affected by the disease, including survivors, caregivers, medical professionals, and those involved in fundraising and research efforts. These heroes can be found in various roles and places, just as cancer is widespread.

As a survivor of metastasized thyroid cancer, I experienced the impact of these heroes firsthand, as they helped me navigate through the challenges of treatment and recovery. From neighbors and friends who provided practical assistance to medical professionals who saved my life, their contributions were invaluable. My very young children, in particular, were my biggest heroes, giving me the strength and motivation to fight for my life. Their collective love and support played a crucial role in my journey to recovery. Cancer Heroes represent the resilience and impact of the indomitable human spirit.

Before cancer, I lived a diminished and inauthentic life. Cancer was the cure. It transformed my life. On November 27th, 2014, I lived. I am grateful for the Cancer Heroes in my life. Since then, I have been living my life with intention and gratitude.

On February 4, 2024 -World Cancer Day, I launched the book, Cancer Heroes – an anthology of lovingly woven stories of healing, survival and profound transformation. The proceeds from the sale of books at the launch went towards cancer research. We had book signing by the authors, an author panel discussion, a stand-up comedian, dancing, food, door prizes and Reiki-infused healing blankets for cancer patients, provided by Project Beam On. I intend to continue collaborating, bringing people together and creating a space of hope and healing by dedicating a day in the year and making this an annual endeavor.
