What is National Black Women In Sports Day?

Black women generate a notable amount of notoriety and for the sports ecosystem. However, the contributions of Black women in the sports ecosystem often go unrecognized and unnoticed. Most recently, Black women have overcome insurmountable hurdles, broken glass ceilings, and accomplished the unfathomable. The goal of Black Women In Sports Day is to highlight the achievements of Black women in all facets of the sports industry. From athletes on the court to executives in the boardroom, Black Women In Sports Day will not only shine a light on a number of Black women in sports but also serve as a source of inspiration and encouragement for the younger generation. Lastly, the celebration of Black women athletes and professionals in the sports industry will also increase awareness and demonstrate the power of representation to the public.

Black Women In Sports Day was founded by Diverse Representation in 2023. The mission of Diverse Representation is to increase the exposure and hiring of Black agents, attorneys, managers, and publicists in the sports and entertainment industries. In addition to creating the first ever database of Black agents, attorneys, managers, and publicists in the sports industry, Diverse Representation also curates various diversity programs, events, and initiatives throughout the country.

Why was National Black Women In Sports Day created?

Black Women In Sports Day commemorates Black women athletes and Black professionals in the sports industry, such as agents, attorneys, financial advisors, and executives, who have influenced the culture in numerous ways. This Day is being created to celebrate their individual accomplishments, which oftentimes go unnoticed and unrecognized. Black Women In Sports Day also serves as a driving force for social change. It challenges systematic barriers within the sports industry by promoting racial and gender equity and equality and diverse-focused opportunities.

How should National Black Women In Sports Day be celebrated?

  • First, Black Women In Sports Day will be celebrated by highlighting Black athletes and Black professionals and their contributions to the sports industry. This day will also give Black professionals an opportunity to tout their own accomplishments.
  • Second, Black Women In Sports Day will be celebrated by organizing award ceremonies for Black athletes and professionals in sports, planning community events to inspire young Black adults to enter the business of sports, and hosting workshops addressing the fight for racial equity in sports.
  • Finally, Black Women In Sports Day will also be celebrated on an individual level, where participants may host social campaigns to bring awareness of the Day, commemorate Black professionals in sports in their own life, or plan their own event recognizing the accomplishments of Black professionals in sports.
