When is National Scrabble Day?

April 13th is National Scrabble Day.

What is National Scrabble Day?

Ready your dictionary, and prepare to challenge that questionable Triple Word Score placement. It’s National Scrabble Day, a day to celebrate the classic game of letters and tiles.

Scrabble had a slow start in life. Its creator, an unemployed New York City architect by the name of Alfred Mosher Butts, started by calculating letter frequency on the front page of the New York Times. He then turned that data into a simple tile game, but it didn’t sell at first. It took two name changes, a game board, and over 15 years to get the game off the ground.

Scrabble now has international airtime. This classic game comes in 31 different languages and sells in 121 countries. There are even copies with Braille tiles.

Fun facts about National Scrabble Day!

  • Scrabble got its own daytime game-show on NBC from 1984 to 1990.
  • In 2004, Scrabble was inducted into the American National Toy Hall of Fame.
  • By definition, someone who is “scrabbling” is “groping frantically.”
  • Scrabble comes in Braille too.
  • If you play the word oxyphenbutazone across the top, touching three Triple Word Score squares while making seven crosswords downwards, you could earn 1782 points with that one word. This feat was accomplished in an actual Scrabble competition.

How to celebrate National Scrabble Day:

Grab your friends, lay out the game board, and have yourselves a round of Scrabble.
