When is National Learn to Swim Day?

The third Saturday in May is National Learn to Swim Day.

What is National Learn to Swim Day?

It’s a scorcher out there, and you’d love to take the kids to the lake and cool off. What a hassle though, right? If they can’t swim, you’re pulling your hair out as they wade deeper and deeper into the dark waters. If that’s you, National Learn to Swim Day is your friend, a day devoted to teaching children how to hold their own in the water.

Learning to swim can be hard, but it’s worth it. Beginners should at least learn the classic doggy paddle. Even more experienced swimmers can benefit from training in how to tread water more efficiently or how to use the backstroke to save energy.

Before pool season jumps into high gear, National Learn to Swim Day promotes water safety and swimming aptitude. It’s an opportunity to give kids the tools they need to be safe while they enjoy the summer sun.

Fun facts about National Learn to Swim Day!

  • The Red Cross launched an anti-drowning campaign in over 50 cities back in 2014 because more than half of Americans at the time couldn’t swim or perform basic water safety skills.
  • Swimming burns calories faster than swimming and biking do.
  • The second most common type of unintentional injury-related death in kids under 15 is drowning.
  • SwimWays Corp. created National Learn to Swim Day back in 2011 to promote summertime water safety.

How to celebrate National Learn to Swim Day:

Teach your kids how to swim. There are plenty of helpful resources online, but you probably don’t have to travel far if you prefer professional swim lessons.
