When is National Comic Book Day?

September 25th is National Comic Book Day.

What is National Comic Book Day?

What does Superman have in common with Calvin and Hobbes? Answer: they’re made of ink. Okay, there’s more to it than that, but National Comic Book Day makes no distinctions. This is a day for the serious, the humorous, the old and the new. From the stories and snappy dialogue to the color and vibrant imagery, here is a day to celebrate everything we love about comic books.

“In brightest day, in blackest night,” aliens, mutants, and caped crusaders battle against evil, against asteroids, against human stupidity and interdimensional beings, even against death. You name it, they’ve fought the very thing. And so we have National Comic Book Day, a day to celebrate these stories heroes that have captured our imaginations.

They’re not just about power and responsibility though. Comic books began as collections of humorous comic strips that had previously appeared in newspapers. From there, the art form evolved and mutated into many genres that draw on themes from history and legend, from science and myth, from people and places all over the world.

So, what are you waiting for? To the Batcave!

Fun facts about National Comic Book Day!

  • American comic books once fell under the investigation of the American Subcommittee on Juvenile Delinquency to see if comic books were enticing children away from good morals.
  • The Japanese manga market is the largest sector of the comic book economy.
  • The first comic books were reprints of newspaper comic strips, which lead to the name “comic book.”
