When will National Black Family Caregivers Day be celebrated? October 15th of each calendar year.
What is National Black Family Caregivers Day? National Black Family Caregivers Day honors the men and women in Black families who quietly tend to their immediate and extended family members and hold everything together with grace. It recognizes the dutiful daughter managing her parents’ appointments, medications, transportation, and meals, the wife caring for a husband with dementia, and the son driving hours to check on an ailing mother. It is one day set aside to say thank you, you are seen, and you are appreciated. In a world where caregiving so often exists in the shadows, this day honors these unsung heroes.
How should National Black Family Caregivers Day be celebrated or observed?
- Educate: Highlight the culturally specific realities of Black family caregiving, including the role of faith, historical barriers to healthcare, and the emotional, financial, physical, and mental costs of caring for one’s own.
- Engage: Host a celebratory gathering over a simple meal, a reception after services, or a day of service — doing laundry, mowing the lawn, running errands, grocery shopping, or providing respite support for a caregiver you know.
- Share: Invite caregivers to share their stories and send a note, a call, or a themed postcard to a Black family caregiver in your life, using the hashtag #BlackFamilyCaregiversDay.
- Support: Businesses can offer caregivers special pricing on services they rely on, such as house cleaning, meal delivery discounts, or gift cards, and organizations can show up with sincere appreciation and resources.
Why was National Black Family Caregivers Day created? The day exists because Black family caregivers do this work at higher rates and with less support — less respite, fewer culturally relevant resources, and a family culture that says “we take care of our own” without considering what that costs the caregiver. It centers and celebrates the caregiver whose lived experience is rarely reflected in mainstream caregiving research and content. It galvanizes organizations, businesses, and the community to show up with genuine appreciation and support.
